English Debating

The English Debating Society of Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, NIMBUS, brings together 70 passionate debaters who meet several times a week to discuss, debate and contribute positively to topics of great national and global relevance. The students are highly motivated, have a zest and zeal for the world around them and are concerned about various socio-political issues.

After conducting the annual auditions on 3rd August, 2017 and having turnout as huge as 150 aspirants coming and auditioning, Nimbus witnessed the greatest participation in the same this academic year. Owing to the powerful response, a second round of auditions, that is, the rolling auditions were held from 25th to 29th of September, 2017, Nimbus ultimately became a family of 70 passionate debaters.

The society is already famous in the debating circuit for its conventional debates and the first edition of ARSD Youth Conclave, this academic session, that is, 2017-18, incepted with the second edition of ARSD Youth Conclave on the 11th and 12th of October, 2017. The conference witnessed participation of around 200 Students from Colleges all over Delhi. Other than University of Delhi, it hosted other universities such as Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, Delhi Technological University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Indraprastha University, Amity University and IIT-Delhi.

The Youth Conclave comprised of two committees which were simulations of parliamentary procedures namely AIPPM and Stakeholders Meet and two Unites Nations' committees namely, United Nation's  Environment Assembly (UNEA) and United Nation's Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

In recognition of the most powerful debaters of the committees, cash prizes were given for the three best delegates, four prizes as high commendation and twelve trophies as special mentions were awarded. Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College won the best delegation award for best college performance in the Conclave.

The second edition of Youth Conclave was a huge success again both in terms of overwhelming response and participation and  proficient organizational skills shown by the members of the debating society. The months of hardwork and commitment bore a fruitful event. The executive and organizing committee’s meticulous planning and execution was palpable and well appreciated by the Chairman and Principal of the college.

The next event of the academic session was the Self Development Workshop conducted on 12th March, by the very well known, Kunal Arora, Co-founder of The Education Tree and TEDx Speaker. After an overwhelming response received when Mr. Kunal last visited the college for his Public Speaking Workshop, this time around, we had around a 100 students attending the workshop that revolved around various aspects of Self Development, enriching and engaging everyone who attended it.

Since its inception in the 1980s, Nimbus has grown as a society and shall continue to do so while maintaining its fundamental goal of creating debaters who are confident with their opinions and ideas. We hope to see these students as future leaders of the country. In Nimbus, we hold training sessions at least two times every week, where in all the passionate debaters come together and indulge into meaningful debating. Not only are the conventional styles of debating practiced, but new and other formats of debating are taught to these members so as to encompass every contemporary model of debating as well. These members, thus emerge as confident, rational and quaint debaters.
