Our Department

The Department of Chemistry stands for excellence in chemical education and research. It is one of the oldest departments of the college, established in the year 1959. It has a strong record of achievement in chemical science and technology research with the support of a dynamic team consisting of teaching staff, non-teaching staff, project fellows and inspired research students. The Department of Chemistry offers the following courses at Undergraduate level: B.Sc. (Honours) Chemistry, B.Sc. (APS) Industrial Chemistry, and B.Sc. Physical Science. With the introduction of Undergraduate Curriculum Framework 2022 (UGCF), it also offers SEC (Skill Enhancement Courses) such as Forensic Science and E-Tourism, and VAC (Value Addition Course) such as Digital Empowerment. The growth of the Department can be viewed from the fact that it is running various research projects, amounting up to crores. The faculty has published numerous international and national publications and has received several prestigious awards for excellence in research and teaching. The Department currently comprises 25 permanent faculty members with expertise spanning Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Nanochemistry, Computational Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Bioinformatics and related interdisciplinary areas. Since 2023, the faculty has published over 190 research articles in reputed national and international journals, secured research grants, published patents, authored books, and received several academic honours. The Department also maintains active collaborations with leading national and international institutions, including universities in South Africa, South Korea, China, Nigeria and the UAE. The Department encourages early exposure to analytical techniques, instrumentation, scientific writing, presentations, research methodology and skill-based courses. Moreover, it provides students excellent infrastructure, consisting of UG-level Chemical Laboratories, Research Labs for Ph.D. students and dedicated dissertation labs. The Department also consists of Chemcrown: The Chemical Society, which conducts seminars, workshops, expert lectures and outreach activities, encouraging skill development, holistic growth and facilitating collaboration for real-world exposure. Under the DBT STAR College Scheme by the Department of Biotechnology, the Department of Chemistry offers interdisciplinary in-house research projects for UG students. The Department further promotes research-oriented learning through undergraduate dissertations, student publications, conference presentations and participation in national and international scientific events. Students have also received accolades for best oral and poster presentations at prestigious conferences in recent years.

OBJECTIVES
