Seminar on New Trends in Nanotechnology and Applications (NTNA-2020)

Atma Ram Santan Dharma College (ARSD) of University of Delhi organized the second edition of a two-day National Seminar on “New Trends in Nanotechnology and Applications (NTNA-2020)” on 6-7 February 2020 within the College premises under the Star College Scheme of the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India and the College IQAC. The Principal, Dr. Gyantosh Kumar Jha welcomed the keynote speakers, Prof. Neeraj Khare and Prof. V.D. Vankar from IIT, Delhi and motivated the gathering with his visionary thoughts. Invited speakers from various academic and research organizations like the University of Delhi, NEERI (CSIR), NSUT and Kumaon University participated in the event. The seminar witnessed robust participation of more than 40 faculty members/researchers and more than 80 students from different colleges across Delhi NCR and neighbouring states, including prestigious institutes such as IIT, Delhi, Delhi University, Jamia Milia Islamia, Delhi Technological University, Sharda University, GGSIPU, IGDTUW, AMITY University etc. The aim of this seminar was to identify the paths between fundamental research and potential applications of nanotechnology research. The success of the seminar has prompted the College to make this an annual event.

New Trends in Nanotechnology and Applications (NTNA-2020)

The Ambedkar and Gandhi Study Circles in collaboration with the Departments of History and Hindi organised a two-day National Seminar on Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi: Society, Politics and Philosophy on 23-24 January 2020. The seminar was sponsored by ICPR. The welcome address by the Principal, Dr. Gyantosh Kumar Jha, hailed Gandhi as an exemplary figure who taught us to differentiate between right and wrong. Mridula Mukherjee from Centre for Historical Studies, JNU delivered the keynote address. She spoke of Gandhi as a real leader of the masses. However, she lamented that, “This India is not the India of Gandhi’s dreams”. Prof. Dinesh Singh, Chancellor of K.R. Mangalam University and former Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi, delivered the presidential address. He talked about the inherent qualities of Gandhi, his principle of non-violence, and Gandhi’s influence and secularism. It was a highly edifying inaugural session. There were 6 technical sessions which saw eminent scholars discussing various facets of Gandhi and Gandhian philosophy. The Valedictory session had Prof. Anand Prakash as the Guest of Honour. The Valedictory speech was delivered by Prof. Ujjwal Kumar Singh, Department of Political Science, University of Delhi. Prof. Singh emphasised discipline as being central to Gandhi’s idea of Satyagraha. Prof. Anand Prakash talked about the importance of equality in society and highlighted the psychological aspects of Gandhi. In the end, the Principal Dr Gyantosh Kumar Jha gave the vote of thanks and stressed on the need to discuss Gandhi humanely.

Seminar cum Workshop on History of English Literature

A two-day National Conference on the History of English Literature was conducted on 14-15 February 2020. This conference was jointly organized by the Department of English, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College and the Department of English, University of Delhi. A grand total of 10 dedicated sessions were conducted in an attempt to cover the entire History of English Literature. As was pointed out by many of the speakers, the lack of History of English Literature in the prescribed syllabus often led to an incomplete knowledge of English Literature both in the classroom lectures and when the students went on to attempt their higher studies. Hence, the Conference was organized mainly to assist and aid students in the Undergraduate as well as the Postgraduate level to expand their knowledge in their field of study and enable a further understanding of the texts within their syllabus.

Two-day National Seminar on Kabir and Bhakti Movement

Ambedkar Study Circle in collaboration with the departments of History and Hindi organised a two-day National Seminar sponsored by the University Grants Commission on the theme Kabir and Bhakti Movement on 19-20 September 2019.

The welcome address was delivered by the Principal, Dr Gyantosh Kumar Jha in which he spoke of the importance of Kabir and the various aspects of  “Bhakti Andolan”. It was followed by the Keynote address by Prof. (retd.) Sudhish Pachauri from Department of Hindi, University of Delhi who spoke of Kabir as an “aandolankaari and gyaanmargi” and elaborated on Bhakti’s role in articulating amiddle space for dissent.

It was followed by the Presidential address by Prof. Nand Kishore Pandey, Director of Kendriya Hindi Sansthan, Agra. He focused on the egalitarian nature of Bhakti while also criticising Kabir for some of his dohas on Islam. He also criticised Prof. Pachauri for his political view of the movement. The two days created a complex picture of Kabir, his interaction with the other saints of the movement, and the relevance of both Kabir and Bhakti in our times.

Seminar on Rahul Sankrityayan: Literature, History and Political Philosophy

Department of History in collaboration with Department of Hindi organised a National seminar on Rahul Sankrityayan: Literature, History and Political Philosophy on 24^th August, 2018 under the guidance of Dr. Asha Pandey, Mr Deepankar & Arvind Kumar Mishra.The seminar started with a welcome address by Dr G. K Jha, Principal, ARSD College. The Keynote address was given by Jaya Sankrityayan who is a noted scholar and daughter of Rahul Sankrityayan.  Her talk followed a technical session I chaired by Prof(retired) Manager Pandey from Centre of Indian Languages, JNU.  The other speakers in the session were Prof Gopal Pradhan, Dr Manindra Nath Thakur and Dr Ramagya Shashidhar.  After lunch break, technical session 2 started with Mr Urmilesh chairing the session who is a senior journalist. The other speakers in the session were Dr Pradeep Kant Choudhary and Dr Kamal Nayan Choubey. The technical sessions followed the Paper presentation session in which 67 papers were presented.  This session was chaired by Dr Pradeep Kant Choudhary. The seminar went successfully with the joint effort of the teachers and students of the Department.

The Principal Dr. Gyantosh Kumar Jha welcomed the keynote speakers Prof. Vinay Gupta (Dean of Examination and Professor at Delhi University) and Prof. S. Murugavel (Professor at Delhi University) and motivated the gathering with his visionary thoughts. The invited speakers were from the various academic and research organizations like Solid State Physical Laboratory, DRDO, National Physical Laboratory, IIT-BHU and IISER- Berhampur and DU. The organising committee consisted of faculty members of Physics Department of ARSD college including Dr. Vinita Tuli (Convener) and Dr. Anjali Sharma (Co-Convener).The seminar witnessed robust participation of more than 75 Faculty member/ Researchers and more than 200 students from different college all across Delhi NCR and neighbouring states including prestigious institutes like IIT-Delhi, Delhi University, Jamia Milia Islamia, Delhi Technological University, Sharda University, GGSIPU, IGDTUW etc. The aim of this seminar was to identify the paths between fundamental research and potential applications of nanotechnology research going all over the country. With the great response and success of the National seminar, Principal declared to conduct the International Conference in couple of years with more participation.

Two day Inter-Disciplinary International Seminar on the topic Indian Vernacular Literature: Premakhyana

The Department of History and Hindi in collaboration with Internal Quality Assurance Cell organised a two day long Inter-Disciplinary International Seminar on the topic Indian Vernacular Literature: Premakhyana on 29-30 January. It was a very successful event in which eminent speakers from the field of History and Literature were present to enlighten the students about this important source to study History. Hundreds of teachers and students from different colleges attended the event. Mr Deepankar from Department of History was the Convener of the seminar.

On the first day, after the welcome address by Dr G.K. Jha, we were delighted to host Prof(emeritus) Irfan Habib from Centre of Advanced Study, Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University for the Keynote address. His name is the most recognisable to students of History, especially when they study the medieval period. His session was really informative for the students. Then, there were two technical sessions with a lunch break in between. Technical Session 1 provided the students and teachers a Historical perspective on Premakhyana. Eminent scholars from the field of History spoke in this session. It was chaired by Prof(retired) Shireen Moosvi from Aligarh Muslim University and the speakers were Professor Eugenia Vanina from Institute of Oriental Studies, Moscow and Professor S.Z.H Jafri from University of Delhi. Technical Session 2 provided a Literary perspective on Premakhyana with eminent speakers from the field of Literature such as Prof (retired) Nityanand Tiwari from University of Delhi, Prof Ravi Bhushan and Prof Kamla Nand Jha.

On the second day, the Base note address was given by the eminent scholar of Hindi Literature Prof(retired) Purshottam Agarwal from Centre of Indian Languages, JNU. There were two technical sessions for the day. Both Technical Session 3 and 4 provided an Inter-disciplinary perspective on Premakhyana with speakers like Prof Anand Prakash, Department of Psychology, University of Delhi and Dr Ramagaya Shashidhar, Department of Hindi, BHU. It was followed by Paper presentation after the lunch break. The Valedictory address was given by Prof(retired) Sudhish Pachauri of University of Delhi. The two days long event ended with a Qawwali(sponsored by Sahitya Kala Parishad).

We would like to thank Dr G.K. Jha, Principal ,patron of the seminar for being always supportive of the initiatives taken by our Department. The success of the seminar was due to the collective efforts of our teachers especially Mr Deepankar, Convener of the event and students of the Department of History who worked very hard to make the event a successful one.
